Regulations on temporary residence period for foreigners

According to the provisions of Article 8 of Law 47/2014/QH2013 and Articles 8, 36, 38 of Law No. 51/2019/QH14 on AMENDMENTS AND SUPPLEMENTS TO A NUMBER OF ARTICLES OF THE LAW ON ENTRY, EXIT, TRANSIT, AND RESIDENCE OF FOREIGNERS IN VIETNAM, the categories of people eligible for a temporary residence card in Vietnam are:

1. Temporary residence cards of types LD1, LD2 and PV1 are valid for 2 years.

- LĐ1 - Issued to foreigners working in Vietnam with confirmation that they are not subject to work permit issuance, except in cases where international treaties to which Vietnam is a member have other provisions.”

- LD2 - Issued to foreigners working in Vietnam who are required to have a work permit

- PV1 - Issued to reporters and journalists residing in Vietnam.

2. Temporary residence cards of types NN1, NN2, DT3, TT are valid for 3 years.

- NN1 - Issued to the person who is the Head of the representative office or project of an international organization or foreign non-governmental organization in Vietnam.

- NN2 - Issued to the head of a representative office, branch of a foreign trader, representative office of an economic, cultural organization, or other foreign professional organization in Vietnam.

- DT3 - Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam with contributed capital worth from 3 billion VND to less than 50 billion VND.

- TT - Issued to foreigners whose relatives have a temporary residence card in Vietnam or who are of Vietnamese origin or who are sponsored by relatives who are Vietnamese citizens.

3. Temporary residence cards of types NG3, LV1, LV2, LS, DT2 and DH are valid for 5 years.

- DT2 - Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam with capital contributions worth from 50 billion VND to less than 100 billion VND or investing in industries and professions encouraged for investment and development as decided by the Government.

- NG3 - Issued to members of diplomatic missions, consular offices, representative offices of international organizations under the United Nations, representative offices of intergovernmental organizations and their spouses, children under 18 years old, and accompanying servants during their term of office.

- LV1 - Issued to people working with departments, agencies, and units directly under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam; the National Assembly, the Government, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuracy, the State Audit, ministries, ministerial-level agencies, and agencies under the Government; provincial and municipal Party Committees, People's Councils, and People's Committees of provinces and centrally run cities.

- LV2 - Issued to people working with socio-political organizations, social organizations, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

- LS - Issued to foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam. Licensed to practice by the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice

- DH - Issued to people coming for internship and study.

4. Temporary residence card type DT1 is valid for 10 years

- DT1 - Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam with capital contributions of VND 100 billion or more or investing in preferential investment sectors, occupations, and preferential investment locations decided by the Government.
