To obtain a Vietnamese passport, foreign nationals need to prepare and follow the following steps:
Step 1:Foreign nationals prepare documents at Section 5 and submit them to the Vietnamese Embassy/Consulate in the country where the foreign national resides.
Step 2: Admission and review of documents
The Vietnamese Embassy/Consulate abroad receives and reviews the documents if the documents have been submitted in full accordance with the requirements. In cases where the documents do not contain sufficient information and grounds for the passport issuance, the Embassy/Consulate may request additional information.
The Embassy/Consulate conducts verification, the verification content includes: personal background, permanent or temporary address in the country before leaving for abroad, travel documents, and information about relatives in Vietnam...
The Embassy will transfer the information of the first-time passport applicants to the competent authority in Vietnam to conduct the procedure of verifying personal information; the verification time depends on each specific case.
The coordinating verification agencies include: Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration Management Department of the Ministry of Public Security.
Step 3: Return of results
The passport will only be issued after the verification of personal information and approval of the passport issuance by the competent authority of Vietnam.
In cases where the conditions for passport issuance are not met, the Vietnamese Consulate abroad will respond in writing to the foreign national and specify the reasons.

To obtain a Vietnamese passport, foreign nationals need to prepare the following documents:
- A passport application form.
- 03 photos 2 inches x 2 inches equivalent to 5cm x 5cm (white background, photo taken not more than 1 year ago, eyes looking straight, head uncovered, white background).
- Curriculum vitae.
- Documents to prove or serve as the basis for identifying Vietnamese nationals such as: Birth certificate, Vietnamese nationality certificate, Identity card, Travel permit, Citizen registration certificate...
- Birth certificate (issued by Vietnamese authorities) for children under 14 years old who need to apply for a shared passport with their parents. A shared or individual passport issued to children under 14 years old will be valid for a maximum of 5 years, a minimum of 2 years or until the child reaches 14 years old.
