Foreigners must meet specific requirements to take a driving test in Vietnam

1. When foreigners want to take a driving test in Vietnam, they need the following specific conditions:

• Must be able to read and write Vietnamese: This is a necessary condition because a foreigner who wants to self-study, take both theoretical and practical tests to obtain a Vietnamese driver's license must be able to read and write in Vietnamese.
• Visa or long-term residence permit: Foreigners must ensure they have a long-term stay in Vietnam to ensure that the visa, temporary residence card, temporary residence stamp, or permanent residence card is still valid at the time of the test. Normally, to take a driving test for foreigners, the visa or residence permit must be valid for over 3 months.
• Good health: It is essential to ensure that foreigners, when registering to study and take a driving test in Vietnam, meet the health conditions as required. Therefore, a health check certificate is one of the important documents when foreigners prepare and apply for a driver's license in Vietnam.

2. What documents do foreigners need to prepare when taking a driving test in Vietnam?

According to Article 9, Circular No. 12/2017/TT-BGTVT on the profile of learner drivers:

Learner drivers for the first time need to prepare 01 set of documents, submit directly to the training facility. The profile includes:

a) Application for learning, testing to obtain a driver's license according to the prescribed form in Appendix 7 issued with this Circular;

b) A copy of the identity card or citizen identification card or passport with a valid ID number for Vietnamese people; a passport with a valid ID number for Vietnamese residing abroad;

c) A copy of the passport valid for more than 06 months and the temporary residence card, permanent residence card, diplomatic note, or official note for foreigners;

d) Health check certificate of the driver issued by authorized medical establishments according to regulations.

Therefore, foreigners taking a driving test in Vietnam need to prepare the following documents:

• Application for learning, testing to obtain a driver's license according to the prescribed form.
• A copy of the passport valid for more than 06 months.
