Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions is one of the important measures in responding to climate change. This article will explain in detail the content and importance of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in the current context.
Pursuant to Clause 31, Article 3 of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, the concept of greenhouse gas emission reduction is stipulated as follows:
Greenhouse gas emission reduction is an activity to reduce the level or intensity of greenhouse gas emissions, increase greenhouse gas absorption.
Pursuant to Clause 32, Article 3 of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, it is stipulated as follows:
Climate change response is human activity to adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Thus, greenhouse gas emission reduction is both a goal and a measure to respond to climate change.
Pursuant to Clause 2, Article 91 of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, it is stipulated as follows:
Greenhouse gas emission reduction content includes:
+ Organize the implementation of greenhouse gas emission reduction and greenhouse gas absorption activities according to the roadmap and methods of greenhouse gas emission reduction suitable to the country's conditions and international commitments;
+ Inventorying greenhouse gases and measuring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas emission reduction at national, sectoral, and relevant grassroots levels;
+ Check compliance with regulations on greenhouse gas inventory, greenhouse gas emission mitigation, implementation of mechanisms and methods of cooperation on greenhouse gas emission mitigation;
+ Develop and implement mechanisms and methods of cooperation on greenhouse gas emission reduction in accordance with the provisions of law and international treaties to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a member;
+ Organize and develop domestic carbon market.
