The terraced-rice cultures of the H'Mông, Dao, Tày and Giáy — brocade weaving, weekend love-markets at Bắc Hà, and villages that still farm the slopes by hand.

What to eat

Chase the rice calendar

Terraces are emerald in June and gold in late Sep–early Oct — a two-week window. Outside it, fields are bare.

Dress for cold

Winter nights in Sa Pa and Y Tý drop near freezing, with occasional frost. Bring real layers.

Hire a local guide

Trekking with a H'Mông or Dao guide is both safer on unmarked trails and the most direct way to support villages.
